112: India’s ‘911’ emergency number
March 28. India decided to choose 112 as all-in-one emergency number like 999 in the UK and 911 in the US.
Emergency numbers such as 102 (ambulance), 100 (police), 101 (fire), 108 (disaster management), 181 (women’s help line), 1097 (AIDS helpline), 1098 (child abuse hotline)… will not continue to be in operation in 2017.
“In emergency situations every passing second counts, whether it is a burglary, theft, road rage, or a fire spreading… The first few minutes are crucial. It is likely that this crucial time may be lost in figuring out what number to dial”. (TRAI, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India)
