Numbers and Lines
All packaging are adapted to the physical needs of their content, there after, all supplementary information is added from selling point of view (composition, weight, calories, date of fabrication, date limit, origin…) A résumé of this information can be found in the barcode.
The barcode is an optical machine readable representation of data. Data is often represented by a double series: one of numbers and a second of lines. Barcodes can be read by optical scanners. If the scanner fails to work, the numbers underneath can be entered.
GS1 Country Code
The first three numbers on barcode labels indicate country of origin. For instance:
Japan: 450 – 459 & 490 -499
France: 300 – 379
Cuba: 850
Germany: 400 – 440
Hong Kong: 489
UK: 500 – 509
Russia: 460 – 469
Italy: 800 – 839
Mexico: 750
Morocco: 611
Finland: 640 – 649
Indonesia: 899
Spain: 840 – 849
Costa Rica: 744
Portugal: 560
US: 000 – 019 & 030 – 039 & 060 – 139
Belgium and Luxembourg: 540 – 549
Brazil: 789 – 790
Australia: 930 – 939
China: 690 – 699
Malaysia: 955
India: 890
